Collette, her background, team & professional experience
“My passion for photography, especially involving people, developed when I was around 10 years old. I originally wanted to be a videographer and work for a TV Studio, as a youngster the aims for my future career were high. I loved being creative and was encouraged by my family, my mum in particular to develop my passion.
When leaving primary school I was dead set on film and withdrew all my savings from which my mum had saved for me throughout school and bought a Canon Hi-8 video camera. Much to my family’s annoyance I was there pointing a camera at them wherever we went! I entered a Blue Peter young film competition and got through to the semi finals but didn’t win and I guess as youngsters do fell out of love with the video side of things.
It was then that I was encouraged to progress onto photography, I got my first film camera aged 12, a Minolta, this I still have today but don’t use. I still have the negs and prints from my first roll of film I shot with that camera, to be honest they didn’t turn out great as I hadn’t a clue what I was doing but I enjoyed experimenting. Again taking a camera with me wherever I went, I soon figured out how to create successful images. I used to ask my sister and grandad mainly to sit for me so I could practice my portraiture, I still have some of those photos framed in my house today. “For me they captured a moment in time that’s passed but that enables my memories to carry on, they are a reminder of an event”.
In 2014 Collette got married and it was her turn to pose for wedding photos with her new husband, David. They tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the top observation deck on The Top Of The Rock in New York City. “People always ask me where I got married and who took my wedding photos. My reply: New York because its awesome and and my assistant, Dean because I trust him 100%”
Work Experience & Training
Aged 16 I went to work with well known local photographer, Stan Bulmer of Stan Plus Stan Two. The team at the local studio in Barnsley welcomed me with open arms and I was soon responsible for shooting the wedding guests with the dedicated black and white film camera. Yes, we were still in the good old film days here and had to have 2 cameras, one black and white and 1 colour! While working for Stan I studied for my A levels at Penistone Grammar School and also at night school at Barnsley College in darkroom photography.
After 4 wonderful years working for Stan I went to study a HND in photography full time at The Sheffield College. This is when I progressed onto my first DSLR, a Canon 350D. My timetable allowed for me to go get some work experience with a handful of other local photographers, including working for Mark MC Photography as a second commercial & pr photographer, retoucher & studio manager and enjoyed over 9 years at his Sheffield Studio.
Then came my biggest step yet, in 2012 a friend of a friend asked if I would photograph their wedding, I owe it to Phil & Trish that Picture Perfect Photography was born. After being asked by them and enjoying capturing their wedding, I didn’t think twice about starting myself up as a wedding photographer, it was just something I instinctively had to do. Using my experience that I had gained with Stan & Mark, I started to market myself. The rest of 2012 was busy! I covered 10 weddings that year and also assisted other photographers for extra experience. I also ventured back into filming, helping Dean Hodson of Img Factory capture weddings on film.
Myself and Dean got on so well that we decided he would also assist me photographing weddings. It made sense, he has been a photographer for over 25 years so I knew I could fully rely on him to create some great images for my clients as a second photographer. I have also worked with another second shooter, Shane who accompanies me when Dean is busy. (Usually on a fishing trip and camping)
“Starting my own business has been the best journey I could ever have asked for, it’s reinforced what I always knew… I love taking photos, especially of people, I enjoy being creative and capturing true moments”.
Thank you to my first clients who believed in me and invited me to share their special day.
